Why Isn’t My Facebook Page Considered For a Username?

Recently I was wondering why isn’t my Facebook page eligible for a username. Recently I updated my status and decided to change my password. When I went to log in, I saw that my new password was ‘myword‘. When I changed it to the one I use on Facebook, I immediately got an error message saying ‘Your Facebook account is not eligible to have a username.‘ I then asked on Twitter if I could change my password and the same happened.

Now I have two questions. First, what happened to my profile? And second, why is my page not eligible to have a username? In this article, we are going to answer both of these questions so you can see better how Facebook developers behind the platform think about applications.

As per Facebook’s own FAQ, a profile page can be join by anyone. Facebook Applications users can join groups or communities and invite their friends to join them. So far, this feature has been use to build stronger relationships among team members, clients and business partners. Therefore, if a user wants to make a page, he has the liberty to do so. This page becomes visible to everyone, and he can ‘request’ for his or her user name to be change.

Now, we are coming to the second question: why isn’t my page eligible to have a username? The answer lies in Facebook’s own terms and conditions. Facebook Applications users are restrict to using their initial user name (also called the “handle”). Only up to 200 words may be use in the profile description and only those words shall be display in the user’s profile.

Facebook Apps users can opt to use a custom username that shall be display in their profile. They may also choose a customised URL for the page. These details shall be reviewed and approve by Facebook before a page is launch.

So, why isn’t my Facebook page eligible for a username? At first glance, it may appear to be an unnecessary hindrance on the part of the user. However, Facebook has established certain rules and guidelines to help its users enjoy greater access to their page and enhance the experience. Namely, a Facebook page cannot contain false information, misleading texts or any content that is offensive or promotes hate.

If you want to use a custom username, ensure that it doesn’t use a copyrighted name or any slogans or words that might cause offense to others. If you want to add some images or other types of media, ensure that they do not use copyrighted images. In addition to this, ensure that the images are not too small to fit in the given area. Finally, ensure that your username does not conflict with the name of your company.

Why is my Facebook page not eligible for a username? 

Facebook reserves the right to deny access to a page based on age, nationality or gender. Additionally, Facebook reserves the right to change or alter these rules at any time. In order to avoid being decline due to these grounds, it is recommend that you create a fictional username, especially if you are a gamer or a member of a community that actively uses fake usernames. This ensures that you can still use your real name when referring to the page and interacting with others.

What is the maximum number of characters allowed for a username? 

Facebook requires that you use a maximum of fifteen characters per username, which includes the dash. If you have longer names than this, you will be ask to shorten them before entering your message. If you have purchase an official account from Facebook, you may be given the option to enter a custom length. By using a shorter customized username, you will allow Facebook to accurately reflect who you are.

Why is my Facebook page not eligible for a username? 

If you have paid for an official account, you will be given the option to choose a username after you have successfully create your account. If you have not yet done so, you will be prompt to choose a default username by clicking on “My Account“. This should only happen if you have not yet chosen a password. If you have already created an account, you will need to select “Change” next to” Username” in order to change it to your desired username. When you have previously used a custom username when signing up for Facebook, it is possible to click “Reset Username” to revert to your older password.
