Women’s premier league ( WPL) is a franchise cricket tournament for women that is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). WPL will be an T20 event and its main idea is to promote women’s cricket in India especially.
Following 15 years of organising the male IPL an opportunity for the growth of Indian cricket and the BCCI plans to follow the same path for female players. The general committee of the BCCI approved the plan of the WPL in the month of October, 2022.
WPL Teams
The first season will include five teams participating. Five of them are owned by owners from the Men’s IPL franchises.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) have expanded their presence within the WPL.Lucknow Warriors and Gujarat Giants are the two other teams that are owned by Capri Global and Adani Sportsline respectively.
WPL Auction Players
The total number of players originally registered to participate in auctions like the WPL auction. The list was cut down to 409 players, including 246 Indians and 163 foreign players. The majority of these 163 international players come from associate nations.
There are 90 slot slots that could be held by five teams, and no team is allowed to contain more than six international players (one from an associate country). This means that the maximum number of foreigners is 30 and 60 Indians will be auctioned by the auction house.
24 of the players set their base prices in the range of INR 50 lakhs. This is the highest price base that a player could set during the WPL auction. Some of the players like Harmanpreet Kaur Smriti Mandhana Jemimah Rodrigues Shafali Verma Deepti Sharma Meg Lanning Ellyse Perry, Meg Lanning and Alyssa Healy are in this group.
30 bidders have decided to sign up under the price range that is INR 40 Lakhs. Radha Yadav Harleen Deol Shikha Pandey Beth Mooney Marizanne Kapp, Hayley Matthews Tahila McGrath Amelia Kerr and Heather Knight are under this auction pool.
The rules of the WPl auction for franchises
Each franchise will receive an amount that is INR 12 crore (approximately $ .46 million around). Each team must purchases of at least fifteen players from the auction, and the maximum number of players in the team may be 18 players.
WPL Auction Date, Venue and Time
It is expected that the WPL Auction will take place on the 13th of February on the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. The WPL auction will begin at 2:30 pm after lunch.
